Kelly Castle
Kelly Castle is a largely 16th and 17th century tower house, remodelled in the 19th century, however it may incorporate earlier work.
Sir Philip de Moubray was granted the lands of Kelly in the 12th century by William the Lion and is thought to have built himself a castle as some time in the late 12th or early 13th century he was given permission by the Abbot of Arbroath to have an oratory at his court at Kelly.
In the 14th century the property was forfeited by Rodger Mowbray and was granted to Robert Stewart. Kelly Castle remained in the Stewart family until 1402 when it passed to the Ochterlony or Auchterlony family, and it was they who were responsible for building much of the castle which can be seen today.
