Thornton Castle dates back to the 14th century, the base of a round tower at the north-east of the building being the oldest surviving part. An L-plan tower was added in 1531, and a building connecting the two towers was built in 1662.
Thornton Castle is in the parish of Marykirk and the county of Kincardineshire.
