Heriot's Dyke

A silver chain was found close to Heriot’s Dyke in the 18th century but is now lost.

The chain was discovered “in the dyke” and was given to a blacksmith named Matheson in Greenlaw, being so oxidised that it was thought to be iron. The blacksmith later cleaned it and discovered it was silver, and it was given to a local landowner, Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Earl of Marchmont.

The current whereabouts of the chain are unknown. I have placed the location at Trove’s co-ordinates for Heriot’s Dyke.
