Maxwell (site of)
There would once have been a tower representing the seat of the barony of Maxwell but nothing of it now remains and its exact location has been lost.
A Herbert de Maccusweil is on record in the 12th century and in the early 13th century John de Mackeswel, chamberlain and sheriff of Roxburgh, witnessed a charter by Patrici de Withichun to Melrose Abbey.
In March 1312 the manor of Maxwell was restored to Herbert Maxwell by Edward I of England having been confiscated on account of him being a Scottish rebel.
I have placed the site of the tower at the known location of the medieval village of Maxwell, located within Springwood Park, pending further research.
