Black Castle (site of)
The Black Castle may have been a predecessor of the nearby Cakemuir Castle although no trace if it now remains.
Traces of the foundations of the castle could apparently still be seen near the farm of Blackcastle in the late 19th century. In 1979 the occupant of Blackcastle, Miss Grant, stated that her father had told her that Black Castle “stood on the nettle-covered slope near Blackcastle farm steading”. There is a field situated at NT 4045 5950 that is known as Castle Moor.
If the Black Castle was the original Cakemuir Castle it may have originally gone by that name. An Eadwulf of Cakemuir is on record in the 13th century witnessing a grant by Duncan of Swanston to Soutra Hospital.
