Raitts (site of)
Raitts Castle was a castle which was later replaced by a new mansion.
There was a castle at Raitts certainly as far back as the late 16th century and most probably earlier. A stone on the west wing of the new house carries the date 1576.
The property is marked on Roy’s mid-18th century map as Raiths.
The castle seems to have been replaced by a new house some time prior to the late 18th century which in turn was replaced by a Robert Adam-designed mansion which was built between 1790 and 1796 for the writer James Macpherson who renamed the estate Balavil or Belleville.
