Mearns Castle
Mearns Castle is a 15th century tower built by the Maxwell family.
Around 1150 Walter fitz Alan was appointed hereditary High Steward of Scotland by David I and granted the lands of Mearns, Strathgryfe (now encompassing the majority of Renfrewshire), Renfrew and North Kyle.
Later Mearns was owned by the Pollock family but passed by marriage to the Maxwells of Caerlaverock in 1300.
The Maxwell family built the castle, probably some time after 1449.
The castle eventually fell into ruin but was restored in 1971.
