Kirkliston (possible) (site of)
The Bishop of St Andrews had a fortified residence at Liston from the 13th century although its exact location has been lost.
I have placed the location of the residence “on the site of the old Town House, which was anciently the Bailie Court House of the bishops of St Andrews”, to the east of the kirkyard, pending further research.
The placename is mistakenly recorded as Linton or Linkton in some sources.
In 1513 the house of Kirkliston was described as having been “recently annexed to the Commandery of Torphichen”, indicating that it had come into the possession of the Knights Hospitallers. Whether this house was one and the same with the Bishop’s residence is not clear.
