Cubbie Roo's Castle
This is the oldest medieval castle known to exist in Scotland, having been built (according to the Orkneyinga Saga) by Kolbein Hruga on the island of Wyre around 1145.
Standing on the summit of a hill, it was defended by two ditches and wall. At the centre was a small square tower, and other lower buildings.
The name Cubbie Roo is a corruption of Kolbein Hruga.
