Lochwood Tower

Lochwood Tower is a ruined 16th century tower house which incorporates work from a 15th century castle.

The tower replaced an earlier castle on the nearby Lochwood motte.

It was the main seat of the Johnstones from the 14th century.

In 1585 Lochwood Tower was burned by the Maxwells which began a feud that rumbled on for a number of years. The feud came to a head in December 1593 when the Johnstones and Irvings, led by Sir James Johnstone of Dunskellie, met the Maxwells at Dryfe Sands and inflicted a decisive defeat on the Maxwells, with the 8th Lord Maxwell dying in battle.
