Udston (site of)
Udston was a probable castle that was later replaced by Udston House in the mid-19th century.
The first owner of the lands of Udston on record is Roger of Oddeston who held the lands from William de Moray of Bothwell in the late 13th century. Roger was succeeded by his son, Walter, who is sometimes claimed as an illegitimate son of Robert the Bruce however that is due to a transcription error.
Some time between 1315 and 1321 Robert the Bruce granted Udston to Patrick de Moravia, possibly a nephew of William de Moray of Bothwell.
By the late 14th century the lands of Udston were owned by Andrew Hamilton of Bruntwood, third son of Sir David Hamilton of Cadzow and Jonetta Keith, daughter of Sir William Keith of Galston.
The Hamiltons owned Udston for several centuries, and John Hamilton, the 10th Hamilton laird of Udston, was Sheriff of Lanarkshire in the late 17th century.
Udston House was built between 1851 and 1855, possibly on the site of the old castle.
