There may have been an early castle at Newbigging although its exact location has now been lost.
In the 14th century William de Newbyggyng was lord of Dunsyar. He held half of the barony of Cultir which he granted to his son, Walter de Newbyggyng, in April 1368.
The castle is marked as a three or four storey tower at the end of the village of Newbigging on Pont’s late 16th century map.
I have placed the site of the castle to the south of the mercat cross and centre of the village pending further research. A possible 10th or 11th century tomb stone was found to the north of the village, on Greens farm and on higher ground closer to the North Medwin river, which might represent another possible location for the castle.
