Castle Mattoch (site of)
Castle Mattoch was included in a list of mottes in north-east Scotland at NH 748 247 however there is no mound at that location.
An unnamed castle is mentioned in Northern Narrative as originally standing around 600m to the south-east, near Garbole Bridge, close to a lone rowan tree and commanding “a fine four way view”. Stones from the castle were “removed to repair and build various farm walls”.
There are a couple of raised positions to the north and west of the bridge, and to the east of the bridge is a flat area within a bend in the river which would also be good defensively.
I have tentatively placed the site of the castle on a raised position to the west of the bridge, where there are turf-covered footings of buildings, pending further research.
Pont and Gordon produced relatively detailed maps of the area however there are no names similar to Mattoch.
