Blawarthill (site of)
A tower once stood at Blawarthill although nothing of it now remains.
In 1757 Sir John Maxwell of Blawarthill, 3rd Baronet of Pollok, bought part of the Earldom of Lennox from William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose, for which he paid £12,000. This comprised of “the lands of Crookston, comprehending the Mains of Crookston, Byres of Crookston, Netherton of Crookston, Hillbank and Broadcroft, Old Crookston, and the wood of Crookston, the lands of Mains of Darnley, with the mill of Darnley, being all parts of the lands of Crooksfie and Darnley, in the Earldom and late regality of Darnley, with the towers, fortalices, etc.”
I have placed the site of the tower at the location of the former Blawarthill Hospital pending further research.
