Balneil (site of)
Balneil was owned by the Kennedys in the 16th century and later by the Ross family but its exact location has been lost.
In the 1590s John Kennedy of Greenan, Creichan and Balneil, natural son of the 3rd Earl of Cassilis, married Elizabeth, daughter of Ninian Adair of Kilhilt. Their son, Gilbert Kennedy of Aryewlane, married Helen Adair, great grand-daughter of Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassilis, around 1603.
Balneil is said to have stood either “on the left bank of the Cross Water of Luce, near the old ford, in what is now a field of the glebe” or “about five hundred yards to the east of the present farmhouse, on rising ground”. I have placed it around 500m east of the present farmhouse pending further research.
