The historic map is an Ordnance Survey map from 1919 to 1947, and is provided by the National Library of Scotland

Cullen Castle was a motte and bailey type castle, although now only the motte remains. The central mound is surrounded by a ditch 6.0m wide and 1.7m deep. Around the ditch is a defensive bank also around 6.0m wide, and about 1.5m tall.

Traces of masonry were apparently still visible in 1873, although nothing no stonework now remains.

A Cullen Castle in Banffshire was the place of death of Elizabeth de Burgh, the wife of Robert the Bruce, but whether it was this Cullen Castle or an earlier castle on the site of Cullen House is unclear.
