Stoneypath Tower is a 15th century L-shaped castle built by the Lyells of Stoneypath. Originally three storeys in height, much of the upper two stories havew now fallen.
The walls are incredibly thick, measuring around 2.7 metres wide at ground level. The tower seems to have suffered a large explosion at some point in history.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that the current entrance – at first floor level in the south wall – was preceded by two ground level entrances, one on the north-west corner which was blocked up at an early date in the castle’s history and replaced with one at ground level in the west wall.
