The Veitch family were originally Normans who arrived in England with William the Conqueror, before later spreading to Scotland
Their name derives from the French "vache", meaning "cow", and their coat of arms features three bulls' heads.
In the 13th century they were settled in Peeblesshire, and built the castle of Dawyck.
