This stone is one of two cross slabs which were discovered when the site of Woodrae Castle was cleared in 1819. The other stone is now in the National Museum.

The two stones had apparently been used in the kitchen floor of the castle. This stone was lost some time before 1854.

It's believed that the stones were originally sited at Aberlemno.
