The Tower of Whiteford was described as being on the White Cart, and below Hawkhead.

Whiteford Road is just back from the White Cart, and opposite Hawkhead, so I have placed the site of the tower here.

Alexander III granted the lands of Whiteford to a man named Walter (later known as Walter de Whiteford) in reward for the courage he showed at the Battle of Largs in 1263. Whiteford was home to the Whiteford family until the death of Sir John Whiteford of that Ilk in 1668, when the family bought Dunduff Castle in Ayrshire.
