Tinwald Place (site of)

Tinwald Place was an early 14th century castle which was later associated with the Maxwell family.

In 1593 George Maxwell of Drumcoltran was taken prisoner by the Johnstones at the Battle of Dryfe Sands along with Amer Maxwell of Carnsalloch, William Maxwell of Tinwald, younger, and John Maxwell of Portrack.

A carved stone coat of arms which was once part of an arch near the castle was later installed in the gable of Tinwaldhouse Cottage and is now to be found in the south-east gable end of a lodge at NY 0190 8043.
