Kirkdale

Gallovidia, vernacule Galloway
Joan Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1654map image courtesy of NLS

Kirkdale House is an 18th century Robert Adam mansion but was built on the site of or near an old tower.

The lands of Kirkdale were acquired by the Hannays of Sorbie in 1532 and Kirkdall is marked on Blaeu’s map of 1654.

The present Kirkdale House was built to designs by Robert Adam between 1780 and 1787 for Sir Samuel Hannay. Nothing appears to exist of the old tower.
