Kinghorn Castle

Kinghorn Castle is thought to have dated back to the 11th century, and was a Royal castle. Nothing of it now remains.

Kinghorn is marked on early 17th century maps, with a tower representing what is likely to be a castle. However the maps aren’t clear enough to establish the exact location of the castle, although traditionally it is said to have been on this site.

James Gordon, 1642

There seems to have been some confusion over the centuries between the original Kinghorn Castle, and what may have been its 16th century replacement, Glamis Tower within the old town of Kinghorn itself.

Little documentary evidence seems to exist for the name Glamis Tower, and I suspect it may have been referred to as Kinghorn Castle when it replaced its predecessor. Certainly the map evidence seems to show a tower on a hill at the centre of Kinghorn.
