Howden motte

Tvedia cum vicecomitatu Etterico Forestae etiam Selkirkae dictus
Joan Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1654map image courtesy of NLS

Little is known about the history of this motte, but excavation in 1957 revealed similarities in size and design with the motte of Selkirk Castle.

The motte is likely to have been superseded by the later tower of Howden.
