Arbuthnott House is built on the site of a motte, and has at it's core the remains of a 14th century tower, with barrel-vaulted chambers under the house and outbuildings to the north-east.

The main part of the present building however was built as a rectangular tower in 1588, with extensive additions made in 1660, 1754 and 1810.
