Tantallen Hill (possible) (site of)

During the second half of the 19th century the remains of a structure were uncovered on the south-east side of a sandhill on Balmuir Farm. It has been suggested that the hill in question may have been Tantallen Hill or Kinnen Hill.

Professor Sir J Y Simpson cut a section through the hill which revealed “the remains of a small circular tower, consisting of large unworked stones, laid in rows and having the interspaces formed by their irregularities filled with smaller stones”.

This may be the same structure which Professor Simpson described as “near Bathgate” and similar to the souterrain at Buchaam in Aberdeenshire.

Since this site isn’t explicitly described as a souterrain I have listed it as a “possible” and there are no extant remains.

Where is Tantallen Hill?

Tantallen Hill is in the parish of Bathgate and the county of West Lothian.
