Spittal of Glenshee

Site type: standing stone

Parish: Kirkmichael

County: Perthshire

Grid reference: NO 1087 7019

Lat / long: 56.81398474, -3.461287311

The historic map is an Ordnance Survey map from 1919 to 1947, and is provided by the National Library of Scotland

Standing 1.8m high on the E side of a steep mound directly behind Spittal of Glenshee Church, this stone measures 0.72m in width by 0.28m deep. Approximately 0.8m up from the ground there are semi-circular notches on either side of the stone.

It's not difficult to appreciate why this stone was erected here - the views along Glen Shee to the NW and SE are stunning. It is interesting to note that before the church was built, this site would have been visible from Diarmid's Grave.
