Faire na Paitig

Site type: stone circle

Parish: Moulin

County: Perthshire

Grid reference: NO 0745 6609

Lat / long: 56.77649644, -3.515478654

Alternative names: Fàire na Pàitig

The historic map is an Ordnance Survey map from 1919 to 1947, and is provided by the National Library of Scotland

This tiny circle consists of four stones, only two of which still stand, the other two lying close to their original positions. None of the stones are more than 0.55m tall, and sit in very shallow sockets - one of the stones moves when touched.

The circle is situated on a small mound close to the edge of a forestry plantation, and nearby are a perfectly-straight line of five cairns, one of which crowns the summit of Elrig.

Visiting this circle it struck me how important the standing stones must have been to the people who erected them. From the looks of the landscape, this area would have been a temporary summer settlement, but the inhabitants still felt the need to build a stone circle - however small.

UPDATE: Having seen some photos of this circle on other websites, I'm now hesitating if what I have photographed is actually Faire na Paitig. I will leave them here until I get a chance to revisit and check.
